Know Before You Go

Your pack doesn't have to be heavy, but it should have everything you'll need. For a day trip that means:

  • Whistle
  • Rain Jacket & Pants
  • Fire Starter
  • First Aid Kit
  • Water & Food
  • Pocket Knife
  • Warm clothing: fleece jacket or vest
  • Headlamp or Flashlight
  • Compass
  • Map

Other things you could add to your pack:

  • Lightweight, weatherproof jacket
  • Extra socks
  • Hat
  • Insect repellant
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • First aid kit
  • Compass and map
  • Emergency blanket
  • Camera
  • Field guide
  • Garbage bag - make a hole at the top, slip the bag over your head and you'll stay warm and dry!
  • Crayons and paper for a journal

Accidents happen to even the most experienced and best prepared hikers, which is why it’s important to always be prepared.

To avoid injury, and as a general rule, you should pace yourself, rest often, drink plenty of water and eat regularly throughout your hike.
